Chapter 7

Mia was amazed at how much of a whirlwind the past three days had been, leading her to this moment. As she sat waiting for Ben Greer, the VP they were meeting, she reviewed her talking points in her head. She and Ryan had gone over everything on the flight today, and she was ready.

It had been such a relief when she got to the office on Monday to see the welcome the team had provided. Abram’s departure and her elevation in the role had been taken quite well and even celebrated by most of the team. She was excited to be given such a critical task of looking for new ventures for GrazTech and was feeling great. She was a bit tired but ready to tackle the world.

This weekend, after the eventful Friday, she and Rainey had spent the weekend moving into the city. The new apartment was a great layout and close to everything. The entire time, her mother had moaned about her moving to the crime-riddled city, but in the end, she had even supplied a couple of lamps and other accessories she deemed necessary for the new space. Of course, when she asked for a key so that she might come and go from time to time, Mia had been relieved to report that Rainey had the other copy and the landlord has forbidden copies being made. There was simply no way she was going to allow her family to have unfettered access to her home − she needed time and space to herself. Having Sunday dinners at the family home now that she lived locally again was her only compromise.

She stood up when she saw a man in a grey suit approaching, and out of the corner of her eye noticed Ryan doing the same. Being in such close proximity to him was still an unsettling experience that filled her stomach with butterflies. She hoped that time would cure this cursed attraction, and she would come to see him as she had previous bosses. Unfortunately, her promotion meant spending copious amounts of time with him, which did not bode well for her self-control.

“Ben Greer,” the man in the grey suit introduced himself with an outstretched hand. Two of his teammates were directly behind him.

After all of the introductions were finished, they were shown into a conference room.

“I was surprised to get your call,” Ben said. “We are still finding our place in the market, and you, of course, created most of the apps we can’t live without.”

“I like your strategy, though, and I think the demographic you serve would put you in prime contention for a partnership with us,” Ryan said.

“We are definitely interested,” Ben said, crossing his fingers as Ryan gave Mia a slight nod. She pulled out the tablet, connected it to the screen on the far wall, and started on her well-rehearsed presentation. The nods, questions, and the entire three-hour meeting went so much better than she could have ever expected.
